The government is expected to announce full marriage equality for same sex couples under reforms to marriage laws to be announced later this week. The reported move will end the final major legal discrimination against lesbian, gay and bisexual people in Britain.
According to the Sunday Times, a proposal to end the ban on same sex marriage will be announced by the Liberal Democrat equality minister Lynne Featherstone at the same time as the government announces the time table for civil partnerships to be held in religious buildings.
Speaking on the issue Director of The Rainbow Project John O’Doherty said ‘this move is to welcomed and will result in another step towards equality. We are disappointed that there has been no reference to extending this proposed legislation and removing this inequality in Northern Ireland’.
He continued ‘the upcoming Assembly elections will provide our local political parties the opportunity to include this issue in their manifesto and gain a mandate for these changes in Northern Ireland. Posturing and pondering is not an option in the fight for equality, and The Rainbow Project will be lobbying all Northern Ireland Political Parties to include these proposals in their upcoming manifestos’.
