Crescent Arts Centre – Saturday 19th February 2011. All tickets £5.00

Chicago Opera Vanguard, an innovative young American music theatre company, explores the contents of a suitcase unopened for fifty years. A suitcase filled with letters sent across the American continent from one young man to another. Letters filled with questions about life, art, and the making of self; about the struggles of what it means to be a young gay man rubbing elbows with the queer elite of 1950 New York; about bars that catered to pre-liberation Manhattan and the clientele therein.

The Suitcase—an Opera is a fantastic opportunity to see this Chicago-based company perform outside of the US. Choosing to make their European debut in Northern Ireland, the company will present sections and arias from the The Suitcase in collaboration with Belfast-based artists. The Suitcase—an Opera will be performed on Saturday 19 February 2011 at Crescent Arts Centre, with tickets reasonably priced at £5.

Tickets can be booked by clicking here or by phoning Crescent Arts Box Office on 02890242338

Chicago Opera Vanguard is committed to creating accessible and exciting theatrical experiences, both concretely and virtually, by commissioning new works, giving a second voice to daring music-theatre pieces, and by completely re-imagining operatic favourites. The Suitcase—an Opera is presented in association with Queen’s Quarter Weekends.

  • Hi all – further info on the DEVISING OPERA workshop, 15 & 16 February

    Devising Opera
—a two-session workshop by Chicago Opera Vanguard

Devising Opera is a two-session (3 hours each) daytime workshop on February 15 & 16 that will explore finding the theatrical, physical, and musical impetus behind found and devised texts.

Composer Eric Reda, Director Karen Yates and Writer/Performer David Kodeski, members of Chicago Opera Vanguard, in Belfast for a week to develop the new opera The Suitcase as a part of Queen’s Quarter Weekends, will guide participants through a series of physical and vocal exercises aimed toward creating miniature operatic moments that will culminate in a daytime public presentation.

Participants will be required to research and then bring factual texts to the workshop that illustrate current policies (political and civic), news stories about gay issues, and views on homosexuality in Belfast and Northern Ireland as a whole. This focus complements the subject matter of The Suitcase, which concerns a young gay man in New York City in 1950.

Those interested in participating must be comfortable with singing, rhythm, and music. They must be in good physical shape and be willing to improvise shamelessly.

If interested, please submit a statement of interest to with DEVISING OPERA as the subject heading by 31st January. You will be notified within a week if you have been selected.

Places on Devising Opera are limited. A £10 fee is required to secure your place on the workshop. More info on Chicago Opera Vanguard at
