On Thursday 3 March the first conference of its kind in Northern Ireland addressing the needs and issues of people experiencing abuse in same sex relationships is being hosted by UNISON LGBT committee. Opening the Closet Door is a partnership initiative between LASI, Rainbow, Strabane & Lifford LGBT Centre, the 24hr Domestic Violence helpline, Victim Support NI and Youth Action, GLYNI supported by the PSNI and the Domestic and Sexual Violence Unit in the DHSSPS.
The conference is aimed at professionals and service providers to put the issues and complexities of same sex relationship abuse on the radar to promote awareness and discussion and improve services and accessibility. Nel Whiting, Learning Development Worker from Scottish Women’s Aid will introduce the context for the issues in terms of gender based violence and argues that the issue of same sex abuse is a gendered issue.
The conference will be workshop based offering an introductory session on sexual orientation awareness and subsequent workshops on issues for men, women, young people and the challenges for service and support provision. The day will conclude with a discussion about the way forward and some recommendations and conclusions. Professionals and agencies are very welcome, please book early to avoid disappointment.
