The Rainbow Project are proud to be holding three football tournaments to raise awareness of homophobia, transphobia and biphobia in sport, in association with Concentrix. Register your 2019 team, below!
As part of the 2017 Belfast Pride Festival, The Rainbow Project, brought Football vs Homophobia to Belfast after its overwhelming success at Foyle Pride 2016. Football vs Homophobia is an international initiative to encourage participation in football and to oppose homophobia, biphobia and transphobia at all levels of the sport – from grassroots to top flight professional clubs.
Fourteen teams took part in a 6 a side tournament held in Seaview Stadium, North Belfast on Sunday 29th July 2018. We hope to increase that number this year.
Director of The Rainbow Project, John O’Doherty said: ‘Sport has the unique ability to bring people together and develop a sense of belonging and teamwork. Too many LGBT people feel excluded from participating in sport and so events like Football vs Homophobia give people the opportunities to take part in sport and have a good time while at the same time taking an important stance against prejudice in sport so that everyone can enjoy the beautiful game without fear or prejudice or stereotyping.’
Sean McKee at Concentrix added ‘Concentrix are proud to sponsor the 3rd Football vs Homophobia tournament in Belfast, along with the first edition in Newry, during the 2019 Pride season.
We believe in and promote the importance of mental and physical health and wellbeing among our employees. This tournament is not only important for promoting participation in sport, it will help to further break down barriers that LGBT people feel exclude them from sport.
It promises to be a great afternoon that showcases the great sport of football with no barriers to participation.’
The tournament will take place on Sunday 28th July at Seaview Stadium from 09:00am.
Working with Pride in Newry we are very happy to be bringing the first Football vs Homophobia event to Jennings Park on August 25th from 12:00.
