Our groundbreaking video series, ‘Screening for all’ aims to increase knowledge of breast screening and imaging in Northern Ireland for Trans and Non-Binary people.
This series was created by the community, for the community, in partnership with healthcare professionals and LGBTQIA+ sector colleagues.
Thanks to: our video participants, our volunteers and videographer, Belfast Trans Resource Centre, Northern Health and Social Care Trust, the Public Health Agency, and our funder, Macmillan Cancer Support.
- Trans/Non-Binary Breast/chest screening’ explains what to expect a breast/chest screening appointment to look like for Trans and Non-binary individuals attending in Northern Ireland. We let you know how and who can access screening, what it involves, and provide additional tips to make the process more comfortable.
- ‘Symptomatic Breast/Chest Imaging’ walks you through step-by-step what to do and what will happen from finding a symptom through to your clinical appointments, as well as showing you what to look out for.
- ‘Trans & non-binary Q&A breast/chest imaging’ features trans and non-binary LGBTQIA+ sector staff sitting down with radiographers to ask questions gathered from the community on screening appointments.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the Rainbow Project’s Cancer Champions team to create an important new resource on accessing the symptomatic breast clinic within the health trust. This video aims to highlight the vital importance of seeking care when needed and to show that clinic staff are committed to providing a welcoming, supportive, and comfortable experience for trans and gender-diverse people. While we know there are many barriers that our community faces when accessing healthcare, we hope these videos will help more people feel confident reaching out for support. Everyone deserves to be heard, respected, and cared for within the healthcare system, and we hope this resource helps reaffirm that.”
Chris McIlwaine, video participant & Belfast Trans Resource Centre (BTRC) representative
“It means a great deal to help create a resource that speaks directly to the experiences of trans and non-binary people. Too often our community is talked about rather than included. Projects like this show what is possible when we collaborate with our community at the forefront. It builds trust and a sense of belonging in healthcare environments that haven’t always felt welcoming.”
Jason Dunne, 'Screening for All' Videographer and LGBTQIA+ Community Member
“Trans and non-binary people face multiple barriers when accessing screenings: from GP records excluding us from automated recall systems, to dysphoria, healthcare anxiety, and a lack of gender-affirming environments. This video is just the start of changing that. Our project aims to remove those barriers for the whole LGBTQIA+ community.”
Joe Henson, Cancer Champions Manager at The Rainbow Project
Our Healthcare Production Partners
“We are delighted to contribute to the development of this video to support transgender and non-binary people in making an informed decision about attending for breast and chest screening services. The video highlights the importance of screening and the support that is available, and we hope that it encourages everyone to attend when invited.”
Clare Hall, Breast Screening Programme Manager at the PHA
“As healthcare providers, it’s important for us to be aware of any barriers that may exist for those accessing our services. Our focus is on providing patient-centred care and we want to ensure that our services are accessible, inclusive and welcoming for everyone. We hope these videos will be a helpful and informative resource for our community, and will provide reassurance for anyone who is coming for a breast screening appointment – possibly for the first time. It’s also an important opportunity to raise awareness around the importance of early detection when it comes to a cancer diagnosis. This project is a fantastic example of partnership working to deliver better experiences and outcomes for our community, something that is at the heart of health and social care.”
Joanne McKeefry, Lead Radiographer, Breast Imaging, Northern Trust
“We are proud to be partnered with The Rainbow Project to deliver dedicated resources to improve cancer awareness and access for trans and non-binary people in Northern Ireland. We know that Trans and non-binary people’s access to breast screening is affected by a range of complex issues and barriers. From screening and diagnosis, through to treatment and support, it is essential that Trans and Non-Binary people get the care they need and are entitled to. Everyone, no matter who they are or where they live, deserves to access the best care possible.”
Richard Simcock, Chief Medical Officer at Macmillan Cancer Support
“Our commitment to providing compassionate care for everyone motivates us every day, and as part of this we are very pleased to continue our successful partnership with the Rainbow Project through its Screening for All series. Providing knowledge and information in this way can make a big difference in encouraging people to access healthcare when they need to, and we hope we have helped to empower individuals and give them the confidence they need to come forward. By working together, we can make healthcare more accessible and improve the health and wellbeing of all those in our community.”
Christine Green, Assistant Clinical Services Manager for Breast Imaging, Northern Trust
